A fairly thematic support deck intended for 2-Handed (or more) play. Aside from Gandalf and Thorongil (optional), the deck doesn't consume any popular multiplayer cards. The Hobbits quest fairly well while also bringing ample Cancel Control and Threat Reduction to the table, so as long as another deck picks up the combat slack (ideally with a Sentinel) and does most of the fighting, this deck should slip by enemies fairly well.
Use 3x Dwarven Tombs to return A Test of Will to your hand. The Map of Earnil can be used to target a Dwarven Tomb, which puts Dwarven Tomb back in your deck as if fishes A Test of Will into your hand again. In a pinch, The Master Ring also offers potent cancellation. This reliably insulates your fellowship from the worst When Revealed effects.
Between 2x Song of Earendil and 3x The Galadhrim's Greetings, you should be able to protect other players from threating out, probably to the extent that the table could splash some Doomed if really desired.
The Pipe subtheme exists to ramp up the card draw and resource economy. The deck fires pretty reliably, starting at a 46 card deck (Bilbo, The One Ring, The Mater Ring, and a Pipe are pulled from the deck). Once you get going, don't be able to sacrifice Glorfindel and replay him every round, as needed.

In a pinch you could stick Sword-thain onto Glorfindel, but this would (1) shut down The Shirefolk and (2) prevents you from sacrificing and resurrecting Glorfindel as often as needed, which this deck can do pretty much every turn once it gets Sword-Sam or some Resourcefuls rolling. It becomes pretty easy to pay for a copy of Glorfy or Gandalf every round, so I use them frequently as archery spones or direct damage targets or chump blockers, as needed. |
Dec 03, 2020How does Bilbo's response work with the setup hand? Do you just have 6 cards, one of which is a pipe or do you start with 7 cards in setup? |

Personally, I play it as you get you fish your pipe and THEN draw 6 cards for a starting hand (much like the original Thurindir's Side Quest ruling), and if you mulligan you keep the Pipe (and Master Card) and draw 6 new cards. So effectively your starting hand is Pipe + The Master Ring + 6 cards. |

For Thorongil, there's a lot of good options. T-Bilbo can boost his questing depending on what's in the Staging, L-Biblo ups card draw for 1st PLayer, T-Merry becomes a 4-5 attack beast if you need to put down enemies engaging you, and Ld-Frodo offers more Threat Reduction and can help your partner out by readying one of their questers. In a pinch, Ld-Sam could get some ready+buff against encounter decks with swarms of enemies enemies, and Lore-Glorfindel can offer healing I suppose, but I think it'd be very unlikely to want to Swordthain him and Thorongil him. Another version of this deck has Arwen ally in it, and she's another exceptional target for Thorongil if your partner has any Noldor or Aragorn. So, the intended target is typically either Lore-Bilbo or Ld-Frodo, but the rest of the lineup has some great toolbox solutions to various quest-contingent needs. |
Maybe I’m wrong but I was under the impression that OHaUH Gandalf required a sphere to be used for sword thain. Is the sword thain just intended for only Sam? Thanks
