Lore Glorfindel from the OG Core Set doesn't get the love his and newer versions do, so here we are leaning into making him the true Balrog Hunter he is using various tricks unlocking 10 to eat undefended attacks and swinging back for up to 13 a couple of times a turn. This version is intended for Solo.
Turn One Setup:
- Thanks to (MotK) Bob he brings Asfaloth for Glorfy turn one, with the lore resources to pay for him.
- We also get the Balrog Art Glamdring for thematic reasons attached to Glorfy thanks to Riddle Game (with plenty of card draw to fuel it and one progress thanks to Hobbits)
- Then we get Well Preserved from the One Ring (mixes it up from the usual IS/S&C default) allowing Glorfy to have 6 to take direct attack and heal and still be ready with 5 turn one, because a true Balrog Hunter doesn't even need to defend, he just shrugs off attacks
- Ideally want to pull Seasoned Forager first turn, if so you can play all the above on Turn One and get things ramped fast
- Bilbo Baggins who also never got alot of love gets his much needed Master Burglar boost
Board Setup:
- There is a crazy amount of card draw and play shenanigans to get you moving (questing power isn't great initially so important to get ramped quickly), if you don't have what you need you have Drinking Song, Mithrandir's Advice, Bilbo, Glamdring, Stone of Elostirion. The idea is you look to get Scroll of Isildur online then use Bartering to get Sword-thain and Thorongil basically for free. Then can use Scroll to replay Drinking Song/Mithrandir to further filter.
- Use Asfaloth and Box of Earth to eat locations to get Stone of Elostirion and Elf-stone cleared to bring in expensive allies like Treebeard Firyal and Gildor Inglorion online alongside threat reduction from Woodmen's Clearing
- Thorongil ASAP gets you Glorfindel effect to amp up Glorfindel's Balrog Hunting skills even more up to 13. Add Golden Belt + Anduril for even more power & actions if you feel you need it.
- Core of the Allies are Ents. Glorfindel is early defender thanks to Well Preserved and then once have an Ent in the mix, ideally Treebeard ASAP, you can get Ent Draught and ultimately Vigilant Guard so Glorfy has 10 for undefended attacks as needed.
- Whilst Glorfindel rides into battle on Asfaloth, our hobbit friends have their Fatty Lumpkin which is awesome additional action advantage for Glorfy, alongside Onward Into Battle.
- With Treebeard online you can also accelerate more Ents, Wellinghall is great for Quests, Derindingle for Defending, meanwhile Glorfy with his tactics incarnation can be swinging for up to 13 on unique nasties.
- Resource generation/smoothing is great with Seasoned Forager, Treebeard + getting a 4th Lore Hero from Sword Thain
End Game is having good questing with some combo of Bilbo, Firyal, Gildor, Wellinghall's, then Treebeard/Derndingle's/Glorfy for damage soak and Glorfy to annihilate everything, with lots of healing and resources on tap.
If the scenario is punishing early on (or havent cleared Alep Hobbit Boons for Master Burglar), you can swap out Bilbo for Folco Boffin for lower threat vs 28 and reduction as needed.

Jun 10, 2025Thanks doomguard, agreed Bob & Glorfy is fun to get Asfaloth first turn, then later Bob has his Fatty Lumpkin. Have the 3x Woodmen Clearing in already, as you say with the 28 starting threat sometimes extra threat reduction for some scenarios is important, Gandalf with excess resources/elfstone does work nicely. Also as noted swapping Bilbo for Folco Boffin then discarding once have Sword Thain up and running I found to be quite viable. |
Jun 10, 2025i overlooked Woodmen's Clearing ;) |
Jun 10, 2025The Riddle-game doesn't start with any progress if your "Thief" isn't a Hobbit. It sounds like yours is Glorfindel, so you may have to answer one more successful riddle. That said, I like it. |

Jun 11, 2025Quite disappointed that the name of the deck is not “Lorefindel”. ;-) |
i like (MotK) Bob+glorfy combinations (can give links to the ones i made if u want)
i think with the doublecontract and startingthread of 29 and elim-lv of 45 without threadreduction it could be dicy in some szenarios with heavy threadincreasement. would think of some Gandalf and/or Keen as Lances
furthermore, Thorongil is cruicial for the build i would take it 3 times.
another thing to think about ist Woodmen's Clearing with Asfaloth around it shuld be no problem to explore locations
